The novel conveys these experiences through a fantastical, even mythical, rendering of the documentary form. Although mired in, in the protagonist’s words, feces and trash, there is a truth here. It is a truth that unfixes space, enabling distant sites to intermingle; that unfolds non–linearly, making time collapse in on itself; that lies below the ground and under the skin. Betrayals, wounds, and trauma disrupt the distinction between interiority and exteriority, such that, in the novel, violence places out in bodily topography, psychic space, and language itself. The result is a work that powerfully represents the desire for reconnecting, for recording history while also disputing the terms on which history is recorded, for locating that which lies outside of the sphere in which maps make sense. This novel brings readers into the reality of war, separation, and survival, a reality that numerous Central Americans have known. In writing it, Mario Escobar has performed a great service.
